Road Commissioners discuss progress with new facility

At its June 2 meeting, the Clare County Road Commissioners announced they can start moving into their new building after a few more inspections and updating their Abandonment Policy.

Dewayne Rogers, CCRC managing director, said after another walk through the road commission should get permission to start moving. The Harrison Fire Department and others also want to do a tour for all the touch-ups.

The new CCRC facility is still being worked on, such as putting asphalt in the parking lot and landscaping, Rogers said. However, being able to move into the building now will help get the move completed sooner.

The Abandonment Policy applies when a road is abandoned and has not been updated since the ’70s, Rogers said. Updating it will give it more modern language to apply to how things happen today.

The reason the Abandonment Policy is being reviewed is because of an issue at Silver Lake.

“They're trying to get a grant for playground equipment for the park, but they're restricted because of the property not being in Lincoln Township's name,” Rogers said.

The property is in the CCRC’s name, and the commissioners are checking that because of the policy not being updated since the ’70s.

The way the road commission mows blacktop also has changed. This year, the foremen and area drivers are mowing the blacktop in their areas, Supervisor David Bondie said. Instead of taking three weeks to do all of the blacktop, it only takes three days.

Bondie also said that the next road they are planning to gravel is Eberhart. The CCRC is putting gravel down and hydro seeding which should be completed by the second week of June.

Bondie also noted that after Hamilton Township paved Dodge Lake Road, Rogers Road to the entrance of Springwood Lake, the commission has been getting a lot of calls saying thank you. The CCRC also has millage signs ordered and plans on putting them up saying Hamilton Township millage money at work.

The CCRC meets at 8 a.m. the first and third Tuesdays of the month at 3900 E. Mannsiding Road.
