Hornets in the House

Posted

Therese Haley, Secretary of Harrison Community Schools Board of Education, recently traveled to Lansing to ask questions concerning educational funding.

She, along with 90 colleagues from around the state, had the opportunity to meet with legislators at the House Fiscal Agency and ask questions during a panel discussion sponsored by Michigan Association of School Boards. House members on both sides of the aisle stressed the importance of speaking out on issues! One member said, " Make the call! Reach out!! We hear you, and it's important that we understand how you, the voter, feel on issues!"

They also heard an update on federal issues and budget items from the National School Board Association staff.

NSBA's participation was timely as President Trump recently released his education budget proposal. Some of the proposals highlighted were level funding for Title 1 and IDEA, a proposed 15% cut to education funding, and a tax proposal to redirect federal education dollars to create a private school voucher program.

While in Lansing, Therese also met with fellow HCS Alum, John Roth, the current Republican Representative from the 104th district, Traverse City area. John is the vice chair of the appropriations committee on higher education and community colleges. John is also a graduate of Harrison Community Schools, class of 1981 and is the son of David and Marie Roth of Harrison.

The day was filled with information, but not many answers. So, as we await the final verdict on educational funding, please MAKE THE CALL! It's important that we speak out and speak up for our kids. They are our greatest asset, and we owe them a premium education!
