Clare County Sheriff Dept Release
On Tuesday, February 11, 2025, at 5:22 p.m., the Clare County Central Dispatch received a call reporting an assault involving a firearm. This assault had taken place at a residence located at 2320 N Athey Ave in the Township of Hamilton. Deputies with the Clare County Sheriff’s Office responded to this residence and discovered a 35 year old Harrison man, Nathanael Coats had threatened a family member with a handgun. During the altercation, Coats had discharged a round from the handgun inside the residence. The family member was able to escape the residence, head to a neighbor’s house and contact the police, leaving Coats alone in the home.
When Deputies arrived on scene, they attempted to make contact with Coats who had locked himself in the residence. Coats refused to acknowledge the Deputies who obtained a search warrant for the house. Once the search warrant was complete, deputies were able to make contact with Coats by telephone and convinced him to exit the residence. Once out of the residence, Coats was taken into custody.
Coats was charged with one count of an Assault with a Dangerous Weapon, one count of Possession of a Firearm While Under the Influence, One count of Possession of a Firearm by a Prohibited person, one count of Discharge a Firearm in or at a Building, and three counts of Felony Firearms (possession of firearm while in commission of a felony). Coats was arraigned in the 80th District Court Clare County. His bond was set at $80,000/10%. He remains lodged in the Clare County Jail. No one was injured during this incident.
