Winning the championship trophy certainly felt good for the Harrison baseball team on Saturday. The Hornets were competing in a tournament at Lake City, where they defeated Marion 6-1 and Whittemore-Prescott, 17-0 to send them away as champions.

“It was a program milestone to win a tournament,” head coach Nick Halm said. “Since I have been head coach, we haven't brought home any hardware. Marion always plays us tough. We pitched well and came out hot at the plate to get an early lead. Against Whittemore, the bats stayed hot, and we took care of business. I was very pleased with how we played in all three phases: batting, defense and pitching. Pitching was exceptional. We gave up four hits, and only one run on the day, that being unearned. We are hoping to keep momentum moving into the second half of the season.”

Against Marion, Parker Latunski got the win, going three and one-third innings and allowing zero runs on zero hits and he struck out nine.

On offense, P. Latunski drove in two runs while Tom Hamilton, Evan Umphrey and Gavin Vanburen all had one RBI.

Against W-P, Nyxon Rhodes got the win, going two and one-third innings and allowing zero hits, zero runs and he fanned three.

Driving in runs were Matt Latunski (three), Vanburen (three), Kegan Chaskey (two) and P. Latunski, Kelton Carlstrom and Hamilton.

On Thursday, Harrison fell in two home Jack Pine Conference games with Shepherd, 10-0 and 16-1.

Vanburen had the RBI in game two.

Harrison also hosted Jack Pine Conference foe Gladwin on Tuesday, April 28. The Hornets lost game one 9-1 but bounced back with a solid 6-5 win in game two.

In the opener, Vanburen had one double and one single while Umphrey had one single and one RBI.

The game two winner was Umphrey, as they went three innings and gave up two earned runs and he struck out three.

At the plate, M. Latunski and O’Day had two hits and one RBI apiece, Umphrey had one hit and two RBI and Hamilton added one hit and one RBI.

Harrison was at Farwell on Tuesday, they host St. Louis today (Thursday) and they’ll be at Ogemaw Heights on Monday.
