HARRISON, MI, July 25, 2026 – Consumers Energy crews finished restoring power in Harrison this morning after thieves late Friday night broke into an electric substation and caused a fire and damage.
The break-in happened at 10:37 p.m. at Consumers Energy’s substation on Deer Lake Road. Someone cut and removed metal cables, and the damage they caused initially led to a power outage that affected over 2,700 homes and businesses.
Consumers Energy continued to make repairs this morning and restored power to all customers around 9 a.m.
“Not only is it illegal to steal metal from an electric facility, but it’s incredibly stupid and dangerous,” said Norm Kapala, Consumers Energy’s vice president of grid operations. “Whoever did this should consider themselves lucky they weren’t injured or worse, and their actions are creating problems for their friends and neighbors.”
“We finished repairs today and appreciate the patience of our customers in the area. Consumers Energy also encourages anyone who might know anything about this theft to contact law enforcement.”
Anyone with information should contact the Clare County Sheriff's Department.
Consumers Energy always encourages people to be safe around power lines and electrical equipment, staying at least 25 feet away if they see a downed wire that’s not being guarded.
