The ski state championships were held back on Feb. 23, with Division 2 taking place at Schuss Mountain in Bellaire. The Clare girls’ team had a great showing, taking seventh place overall. They had 97 points in slalom and 119 in giant slalom for a final score of 216; conversely Detroit Country Day won the state championship with 91 points.

“The girls had a really good day as they placed seventh, this is the second-best finish for the girls at the state finals, back in 1984 they finished fourth,” head coach Tim Gariglio said. “This was great for the program. This left several of the girls hungry for next year and really asking what they can do for next year to become better.”

Individually, Ivy Russell was able to come in 16th in the giant slalom, which gives her second team all-state.

On the boys’ side, Jordan Gariglio was their lone qualifier, and he finished 42nd in the slalom and 55th in the giant slalom.

“He had a really good day also and has three more years to improve,” Gariglio said.
