2 Children Critically Injured in Car-Buggy Crash

At approximately 8:25 p.m. Friday, May 2, deputies from the Gladwin County Sheriff’s Office were called to investigate a personal injury incident near the intersection of Bard Road and Calhoun Road in Beaverton Township, involving a motor vehicle and Amish buggy.

Through the course of the investigation, it was determined the buggy was occupied by a 62-year-old Amish husband and his wife who is 60 years old from Clare, along with two of their granddaughters, ages 1 and 10 years, from Gladwin; at the time of the crash. The buggy was traveling southbound on Bard Road approximately one-tenth of a mile south of Calhoun Road. Their buggy was hit from behind by a 2016 Nissan Versa Note, also traveling southbound on Bard Road. The Nissan was being driven by a 61-year-old male from Mt. Pleasant.

The male operating the Nissan was transported by ambulance to MyMichigan-Midland Hospital for non-life-threatening injuries. The Amish husband was transported by ambulance to Midland Hospital for minor injuries and his wife accompanied him. The Amish children suffered life threatening injuries and were transferred from Midland Hospital to Flint Hurley Hospital, in stable but critical condition, at the time of the press release.

The section of Bard Road where the crash occurred was shut down for several hours while the accident reconstructionists from the Michigan State Police were on scene. The Gladwin County Sheriff’s Office was also assisted by Beaverton City Police Department and Beaverton Fire and Rescue. The crash is still under investigation. Reports will be forwarded to the Gladwin County Prosecutor’s Office for review.
