CARL ALBERT NOLAND
Carl Noland (Lefty),
93, passed away on April 17, 2009 at 12:40 pm at his residence in
Valrico, Florida. He retired 30 years ago to Valrico after raising his
family in Harrison, Michigan.
His children he loved and who loved him were present: Mike
(Marcie), Patrick (Nancy), Kay (Gerry) Willey and Molly (Ken). Lefty and
his wife Dot (she preceded him in death on April 25, 1999) have 13
grandchildren and 30 great grandchildren.
Lefty was born in Calumet, Michigan on March 25, 1916 to Mary (Kubiak)
and Frank Nowakowski. He had 3 brothers (Frank, Jack and Cy) and 2
sisters (Agnes and Martha).
Lefty and Dot were married for 62 years and were buddies all their
lives. Their love, care and generosity for others were passed on to
their children, grandchildren and great grandchildren.
His legacy was bringing out the best in those he met with his
smile, humor and the twinkle in his eyes. He had a silent motto: don’t
criticize, condemn or complain and he lived up to that. He wanted
everyone around him to enjoy life. He was a servant to others.
He worked in the CC Camps during the depression, was a barber,
worked in a Steel Mill and owned an IGA store with his brother-in-law.
Lefty was in the grocery business in Michigan most of his life and both
he and Dot owned a small, very successful, party store (Lefty’s
Superette) for 15 years in Harrison, Michigan.
His love of golf with Dot (and especially beating his children at
golf) was part of his life at Devil's Knob Golf Course in Harrison and
Buckhorn Golf Course in Florida. His golfing friends in both Harrison
and Valrico were a major joy in his and Dot’s life. He and Dave Harper
were announcers at the Harrison High School football and basketball
games during the 50's, 60's and 70's.
Both Dot and Lefty were involved at St. Athanasius Church in
Harrison, Michigan throughout their lives and he was an usher, lector,
Eucharistic Minister and major decision maker in the churches growth for
over 50 years. Both were very spiritual people.
