FRED WALRECK MATTHEWS
December 22, 1942 - February 15, 2010
Fred Walreck Matthews,
67 of rural Harrison, passed away Monday, February 15, 2010 at his home.
Mr. Matthews was born December 22, 1942 in Denton Township, Michigan,
the son of Cecil L. and Doris (Skeels) Matthews. Fred served his country
in the United States Army during the Vietnam War. Mr. Matthews was
united in marriage to the former Lois S. Less on May 31, 1969 in Flint,
Michigan. Lois preceded Fred in death on July 3, 2004. Fred had been a
life long resident of Harrison, having spent a short period of time
residing in Grand Blanc, Michigan.
Mr. Matthews was a member of Gladwin Masonic Lodge #397, where he had
served as Past Master. Fred enjoyed watching Fox News and listening to
Rush Limbaugh.
Surviving are his three children: one daughter, Genevieve Hagerty and
husband Dan of Somerset, Wisconsin, two sons: Andrew Leonard Matthews of
Ann Arbor, Michigan and Luke Matthews and wife Jennifer of Traverse
City, Michigan, his companion, Ms. Renee Brown of Gladwin, three
sisters: Thelma Berridge of Davison, Michigan, Ethel Sharp of Harrison
and Shirley Toombs and husband Jim of Ortonville, Michigan, one brother,
Melvin Matthews and wife Margaret of Florida, plus numerous nieces and
nephews. Mr. Matthews also was preceded in death by his parents, two
brothers: Delvin and Leland Matthews, a half brother, Leonard Matthews
and a half sister, Iris Matthews.
Funeral services for Mr. Matthews were held Thursday, February 18, 2010
at 10:00 a.m. from St. Athanasius Catholic Church, Harrison, with Father
Noel Rudy officiating. Burial was held at Pleasant Plains Cemetery,
Harrison. Memorial contributions in memory of Mr. Matthews may be
